Local Historian to the Rescue

Monies raised by local historian, George Grant, from the sale of his book “Pictorial Memories of Ardersier” are to be dedicated to a local cause – the restoration of Ardersier War Memorial Hall.

Born and bred in the village, George has compiled an historic archive of photographs and information charting the history of Ardersier and many of its characters and all the proceeds from the sale of his book will go towards the restoration fund for hall.

George is an electrician with the lighting section of The Highland Council’s Transport Environmental and Community Services. He said: “I have been collecting photographs and listening to tales and folklore from older people who live here. I thought a book on the history of Ardersier would be of interest to locals – and it could raise funds for the War Memorial Hall.”

A range of local sponsors donated funds to make this possible with Culloden and Ardersier Ward Councillors contributing almost £1,500 to help with publication costs.

Local Highland Councillor Roddy Balfour said: “This book is a double winner. It records in literature the history of Ardersier that can be referred to for years to come. It also raises funds for an extremely worthy cause. The War Memorial Hall has needed restoration for some years and this will help with fund raising for that.”

George’s book is available, priced £10, at Fort George Museum, Ardersier Service Point, McColl’s in Ardersier and Kingsmills Stores in Inverness or from the web site at www.ardersier-history.co.uk
